Daddies' Girl, by Charlotte Tarantola

$150.00

YEAR OF ESTHER IN DRAG is a painting series inspired by 2019 Lunar New Year on February 5th. This year is going to be the #YearOfThePig, and we can’t think of a more famous pig than @estherthewonderpig. We’ve been following her since her two Canadian dads got her, gave up their careers to care for her, and raised money to open up an animal sanctuary. They love to dress Esther in drag once in a while, so we thought the best way to properly observe this special Lunar New Year would be by painting portraits of @estherthewonderpig in drag.

A percentage of the proceeds from any sales of the portraits will be donated to Esther. All images by @estherthewonderpig.

MEMENTO SACKLER is a painting series inspired by the work that artist Nan Goldin has been doing through P.A.I.N. (@sacklerpain) to raise awareness of the devastating effects of the opioid epidemic that the drug Oxycontin helped to create. The Sackler family, who led the company manufacturing Oxycontin, has made billions on a drug that has killed hundreds of thousands of people in the course of two decades. Inspired but Memento Mori paintings, reminders of mortality, we juxtaposed bottles of Oxycontin on newly rendered vanitas still lifes.

A portion of this sale will go to support P.A.I.N.

Ode to a Pothole

by Jennifer Wheelock

O’ swallower of tiny cars

slopper of coffee

purger of purses

teeth to our tires

cat crouched then HISS

compeller of curses

ruiner of shocks

shocker of drowsy drivers

fountain of filthy water

drencher of benches and bus riders

thrower of gravel

lover of havoc

hewer of highway

delighter in decay

bully with a boot out

bucker of babies

plague of the pavement

petulant, mocking menace

jolter of spines

thank you

for reminding us

rough journeys

make art of our arrivals.

Splish Splash, by Charlotte Tarantola

$150.00

Oil on 9" x 12" hardboard, unframed, 2019

The series is of paintings was created during a painting retreat in Palm Springs in November 2018.

Lorraine and Randy, the current owners of Elephant Car Wash, allowed us to set up our easels in across the street from the mid-century structure, where we painting the iconic sign from life.

Elephant Car Wash has been an institution in the Coachella Valley ever since it opened in the mid 60s. The current owners take stewardship of the world famous sign very seriously. They are also environmentally conscious: the car wash uses environmentally-friendly products, sends used water to a treatment facility, and makes sure everything recyclable gets actually recycled.

PAINTING SERIES: BONSAI TREES.

News of a dramatic Bonsai heist in Japan caught our attention on February 2019. This slightly cheesy sentence in the New York Times article reporting the news was the inspiration for this week's painting series: "Keeping a bonsai tree is as much an art as making a painting of one."

❓ Why did the writer use such analogy?

❓ Are there many examples of bonsai tree paintings throughout art history?

❓ Is painting a bonsai tree really as hard as raising and caring for one?

❓ Is the writer also a painter?

Marsha's Martini, by Charlotte Tarantola

Original oil on 12x16 cotton paper, unframed, 2019

On June 28, 1969, Marsha P. Johnson threw a shot glass at a mirror in the torched Stonewall bar in Greenwich Village and screamed: "I got my civil rights!" It was an iconic moment that defined the beginning of a battle for equality for a then invisible, disregarded, and heavily targeted minority within a minority.

At the closure of a discombobulating 2019 #BlackHistoryMonth marked with disturbing fashion designs and fake police reports, among a string of other baffling pears, we paid homage to this unsung American hero with a portrait painting series inspired by the many iconic, nonconforming images she left behind.
