LACMA welcomes Roofless Painters for a day of Painting by Chris Burden's Urban Light.

Join plein air award-winning painter Julio Panisello for an afternoon of fun and inspiration at this historical architectural landmark.

  • Only 10 pay-per-paint spots offered.
  • Sunday October 1st, 1-3pm, 2018.
  • Any level and experience welcome.
  • Please make arrangements to arrive 15 minutes before 1pm to allow yourself to park and get settled. Session introduction will start promptly at 1pm.

Urban Light is at 5905 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles.

Where do I park?
We recommend parking at the LACMA underground parking lot, on 6000 West 6th St.

  • Authorization to paint in the grounds of the cemetery.
  • All the materials needed for painting (easel, panel, oil paint, brushes, supplies).
  • Set up and clean up.

URBAN LIGHT is an assemblage sculpture of 202 vintage street light standards from the 1920s and 1930s, created by artist Chris Burden. The lampposts are cast iron and range from 20 to 30 feet in height; many have been salvaged from Los Angeles neighborhoods. The sculpture includes dusk-to-dawn solar-powered lighting.

Julio Panisello, the recipient of the Grand Prize and the Audience Choice Award in the 2016 Los Angeles Plein Air Festival, earned his BFA (cum laude) in Painting and a postgraduate degree in Pedagogy from the University of Barcelona, Catalonia. He has exhibited widely in Los Angeles and Spain including a solo exhibition with ShoeboxLA, THE LODGE, the Los Angeles Arboretum, the main branch of the New York Public Library, and Gallery 825. He is the creator of The Havisham Hour, a multi-media, visual arts and literature project based on Charles Dickens' novel Great Expectations, Julio with a P, a collection of recorded conversations with local artists, and the founder of Roofless Painters which hosts educational painting sessions in iconic locations.
