DISTANT UNLEARNING
Browsing through Monet's work, we came across a painting that took our breath away: A Corner of the Apartment.
Jean, Monet's son, stands in the penumbra of a room while his mom conspicuously watches from the side. His silhouette is only visible in contrast to the soft, bluish light bouncing off the herringbone parquet.
Goosebumps.
The lone and silent shadow of Jean inspired us to reflect on the sequestered childhood some kids are going through in the present time due to the remote online education. We came across images of children struggling to keep up with online routines and demands. These kids can't hide their catatonic state, lone and silent as Jean Monet, their silhouettes are only 'visible' in contrast to the soft bluish light bouncing off the laptop screens: same state, different century.
Theirs faces remind us of Tronies, a genre of portrait painting in vogue during the Dutch Golden Age that featured faces in expressive emotions or lack thereof.
With this collection, we're building a time bridge connecting the 16th century and 2020 by making contemporary portraits in the Tronie style of children being emotionally fried in front of computer screens.
