FACEPALM
The first "presidential" debate of the upcoming election has been described as the worst in history.
In our text conversations with family and friends, we found ourselves using the facepalm emoji a couple of times to convey our feelings on the shitshow. We learned that the facepalm gesture has become a universal expression of frustration, disappointment, exasperation, embarrassment, shock, surprise, exhaustion, and incredulous disbelief.
Facepalm appeared as a term for the first time in 1996 and became an official word in 2016 (remember 2016?), so it hasn't been that easy to find examples of true facepalms in art history, which left us a bit bewildered and also a bit concerned. We found a few, but we thought it would be a good idea to create our painted versions to contribute to contemporary culture or represent its decline.
It's going to be a spooky October, so why not start processing our feelings now through a facepalm self-portrait and turn them into something powerful and memorable?
• Painting premise: Self-portrait with our hand covering our face. We invite you to take photos of someone else's facepalm if you prefer.
• Props: a selfie of your facepalm, either on your smartphone or printed.
• Painting surface: any size, any kind. We recommend 9x12 or under.
• Painting webinar medium: oil over cotton paper. Feel free to select your media.
