FIREWALKERS
As election day comes closer, we’re seeing a few people express their ardent desire to cast their ballots. Speaking of 'ardent,' one of the phrases people are using to passionately express what they will do to vote this time is “walk over flaming coal.” The stakes this time cannot be any higher, but there is also a sense of rage due to the fact that voting has never been more difficult. Yes, because of the pandemic, but also because of all the voter suppression tactics that are being deployed.
Firewalking has been practiced for thousands of years by diverse cultures. Social theorists have long argued that the ritual still persists today because it has a social-cohesive effect. Scientific studies have found out that the heart rate rhythms between performers of the firewalk and non-performing spectators synchronize during the event.
In the spirit of making sure that everyone who can, does vote, and also to synchronize our heartbeats during this spine-chilling moment in history, we’re getting inspired by images of feet over flaming coal for this painting series.
