MUSHROOMS
Mushrooms do not require sunlight to make energy for themselves. They thrive in darkness, in isolation. Naturally, we thought using mushrooms as a painting subject could not only be beautiful but conceptually timely, considering that we're back inside our homes. Unlike Spring, our days are much shorter now. We're actually fast approaching the shortest day of the year. We're all mushrooms.
In that sense, we've learned that we're more closely related to fungi than plants and potentially share up to 50 percent of our DNA with them. That's why our bodies are hardwired for mushroom nutrition.
Here is a poem by Sylvia Plath that better explains why we're choosing to paint mushrooms this week:
Mushrooms
Overnight, very
Whitely, discreetly,
Very quietly
Our toes, our noses
Take hold on the loam,
Acquire the air.
Nobody sees us,
Stops us, betrays us;
The small grains make room.
Soft fists insist on
Heaving the needles,
The leafy bedding,
Even the paving.
Our hammers, our rams,
Earless and eyeless,
Perfectly voiceless,
Widen the crannies,
Shoulder through holes. We
Diet on water,
On crumbs of shadow,
Bland-mannered, asking
Little or nothing.
So many of us!
So many of us!
We are shelves, we are
Tables, we are meek,
We are edible,
Nudgers and shovers
In spite of ourselves.
Our kind multiplies:
We shall by morning
Inherit the earth.
Our foot's in the door.
