VEGGIE JESUS
Our inspiration journey starts from learning about Baby Jesus theft, a strange “tradition” that consists of stealing the Jesus figurines from public Christmas tableaus during this time of the year. Sociologists, theologists, and psychologists have various reasons to explain the practice. Instead, we were interested in finding out how some of the stolen figurines were replaced or what kind of surrogate objects were employed to substitute them.
Enter carrots. We read of a nativity arranged by a farmer in which the baby was represented by a carrot. And that tableau made us think of images of root vegetables with anthropomorphic features that people have held as some sort of trophies or perhaps even religious icons.
We learned of several explanations of why we love anthropomorphic objects so much to the point of establishing strong bonds with those human proxies at different stages of our lives. Artist Jamie Diamond, for example, features portraits of ‘reformers’: people who have lost a child, are unable to bear children, and feel that crafting or collecting handmade babies becomes a balm for their empty-nest syndrome.
In conclusion, this will be a still-life collection of fruits and vegetables with anthropomorphic features. We have compiled a photo library. Alternatively, you are welcome to create your own tableau with fruits and veggies.
