SELF-PORTRAIT BLINDFOLDED
This will be the 6th painting series of 2021.
Since the 16th century, Lady Justice has often been depicted wearing a blindfold. The blindfold is supposed to represent impartiality, the ideal that justice should be applied without regard to wealth, power, or social status.
We've been absorbed by the trial in the Senate this week. Having the course of events described in such detail gives us a clear perspective of the Jan 6 attacks' graveness. And yet, we also know there will be no conviction. Lady Justice will be voted down.
But Justice isn't the only character wearing a blindfold. In a couple of days, Valentine's Day will be thrown at us. We've always found this alleged celebration of romance very excluding rather than truly encapsulating Cupid's playful, undiscriminating love-casting spirit. It's a cheating occasion for those who happen not to be in a relationship, have gone through a painful breakup or have lost a significant other, are victims in a toxic attachment, are experiencing the short end of the unrequited love stick, or are shunned by society because the object of their desire doesn't conform to a one-size-fits-all archetype.
A blindfold can mean so many things: a role-play toy, a symbol of universal love, a form of protesting injustice, the chilling preamble of gruesome violence, a requisite to bust a Piñata open, the essential fashion accessory in the final act of a knife thrower performance, a rule in a tasting competition.
Let's document this historic week by painting our faces under a blindfold, so we can look back from the future and remember what happened around us at this moment in time and how we emotionally responded to it.
PS: Considering the political circumstances, I think my portrait will fall in the knife-thrower metaphorical category. An inexperienced knife-thrower to be specific. So I'm really looking forward to it.
