FIRST DOGS
We are hardly getting accustomed to the ugly ageist attacks targeting the 46th president. On February 19, a right-wing newscast host sunk to a new low by extending the demeaning ageism to the president’s 12-year-old, slightly graying German Shepherd, Champ.
“That dog needs a bath and a comb and all kinds of love and care.”
“I don’t know how much love and care he is getting.”
“This dog looks like, I’m sorry, from the junkyard.”
“He looks very dirty and disheveled and very unlike a presidential dog.”
These are lean times for right-wing conspiracy pundits, forced to resort to making fun of the president’s senior dog out of lack of offensive material. Needless to say, dog lovers from all over came out in defense of Champ by posting pictures of their own senior dogs. The backlash to that segment was beautiful to see and read.
Coincidentally or not, an official portrait of Champ and Major in the Oval Office was released this week. We will also pay homage to the First Dogs by painting portraits of them.
