OXEN
"Everybody needs an Oxen painting in their bedroom." That's going to be our sales pitch after we create paintings for this collection.
In an interview with Ashish Anand, CEO of Delhi Art Gallery, published on February 27 in Forbes India, he talks about how the art market rose in 2020 during the pandemic. The appetite for consumption of art boomed, surprising many. More people looked at art online in 2020 than physically in all the 28 years Anand's gallery has been open.
Comparing March-December 2020 to the same nine months in 2019, Etsy reported a 95% increase in searches for wall art. Adobe Analytics states that average daily sales of "art goods" increased 134% between the pre-COVID-19 months of 2020 and last fall.
This rise in art consumption and sales made us think about the iconic 1966 painting by John Baldessari: Tips for Artists Who Want to Sell. The sarcastic piece quotes a list in an art magazine that asserts paintings of cows and hens collect dust while bulls and roosters sell.
Well, we're going to put that hypothesis to the test by kicking it up a notch: we're going to paint oxen, since 2021 is the year of the ox, and see if we can ride this art wave.
In a recent article in Oprah Magazine, Susan Levitt, professional astrologer, feng shui consultant, and author of Taoist Astrology, explains that the main focus this year is on the bedroom as hard-working oxen do best after peaceful sleep.
So there you have it. Let's paint oxen this week and see how many of our paintings end up in collectors' bedrooms.
