Painting Series: TRANS LIVES MATTER
(Series statement written on November 2020).
In this painting webinar, we observe this year's Transgender Day Of Remembrance by painting portraits of the 36 trans bodies murdered in the US since January 2020, the worst year in trans violence ever recorded.
We're also talking about trans people in pre-modern times that achieved fame and wealth before there were words to define them, science to recognize them, technology to connect them to others, a community to support them, or medical options to transition. And there were plenty of powerful and respected trans individuals, in every culture, country, and century.
The Transgender Day Of Remembrance has been observed annually on November 20 to memorialize those who have been murdered by a deadly cocktail of racism, sexism, homophobia, and transphobia. It is a day to draw attention to the continued violence endured by transgender people, who continued to be denied equal access to opportunity and necessities like employment, housing, and health care.
