Painting Series: CLOWN CHIC
(Series statement written on February 2021).
On the first Sunday of February, clowns from all over the world gather at the Holy Trinity Church in East London to pay homage to Joseph Grimaldi (1778 -1837), an English actor, comedian, and dancer who is considered the creator of the modern clown.
Clowns have little to celebrate in the current state of affairs, though. Ever since the fairly recent creation of the evil clown archetype, fear of clowns has replaced their historical role in becoming tragic-comedic mirrors of our collective subconscious.
In this webinar, we will sidestep the identity politics in which the art of clowning has been dragged into, and focus on the contributions to contemporary art.
We’ll create portraits inspired by contemporary fashion editorials that have incorporated clown aesthetic elements into their expression.
