Painting Series: DROUGHT
(Series statement written on April 2021).
When we painted Serge Attukwei Clottey's installation The Wishing Well, we learned about the water crisis in Ghana and how truly interconnected our fragile ecosystems are. After the painting experience, we started noticing articles about the current megadrought affecting the South West, the worst since Medieval time.
Climate scientists mark the beginning of the current megadrought around the year 2000. Megadroughts are a string of droughts affecting the same area for an extended period of +35 years. We are on year 21, and climate scientists say that we haven't seen the worst yet. Because of human-caused climate change, the prospects of getting out of the current decades-long dry spell seem farther off than the last known megadrought over 1000 years ago.
This past Wednesday, as we were learning about all this, CA governor declared a drought emergency on two counties. He did it with a press conference held at the bottom of the Mendocino Lake, now completely dry.
We are going to paint landscapes in the South West that have been impacted by the current megadrought.
