PARENTS PORTRAITS - Collection Essay
The war against Ukraine has boxed in our thoughts and emotions this past week and left little room for much else. In a world where everything seems so interconnected, we are mournful about this wretched buckling of history. From a place of powerlessness, it’s nice to see voices in social media help float the narrative as wide and as long as possible using images of flags and national flowers to affirm that the existential anguish is as real as it is universal.
In trying to join those voices, we stumbled upon a portrait by Otto Dix of his parents. We resonated with the despair and heartache in the painting. A heavy silence hangs in the scene, perhaps the result of a life lived in struggle but without anything to show for it. We make ourselves see emotional scars of an agonizing uprooting: when you are left with no choice but to break with what has given you identity since birth, a land, a tongue, a home, perhaps even a parent or a child.
In that overwhelming fracture, the image of a parental figure can symbolize all that you left behind, tangible or not, and in that act of remembrance itself, a reminder of all that you are.
- Painting premise: Figure.
- Props: use a photo of a parent as a reference.
- Painting surface: any size, any kind. We recommend 9x12 or under.
- Painting webinar medium: oil over cotton paper. Feel free to select your media.
