Q: I am completely new to painting. Do I need to have any experience in order to join one of your painting classes?
A: You do not have to have any experience to paint with us. Our groups consist of painters who've been practicing for years and painters who've never held a paintbrush in years.
Instruction is provided in a way that can be used regardless of the level of experience. We give general guidelines and also individualized attention.
It not only works, it creates a rich, dynamic, and non-threatening environment to get your painting practice either started or continuing.
Q: Do I need to bring anything with me to the class?
A: Unlike other fine art environments where you are given a list of expensive art materials you must purchase and bring in order to join the practice, we provide every single tool, supply, and setup necessary to start painting from the get go.
You just sign up and bring your creative, open-minded self.
Q: Do you have drop-in sessions?
A: Technically, all of our sessions are drop-ins. We don't have a continuing curriculum or a course that demands consecutive attendance. We design our sessions around flexibility. We paint when we can. We know a thing or two about commitment and procrastination, and also about having busy schedules, so we purposely make each session self-contained. You come in, paint, and leave with a finished piece.
Q: How are you different from a 'Paint and Sip' session?
A: Although we also sip (sometimes), and we certainly socialize, our workshops prioritize the fine art aspect of creativity. We're a professional art studio inviting people interested with the ins and outs of the creative process to get engaged and challenged by and through painting. We don't follow a specific formula or a step-by-step system. We don't use a single image reference to model each step for an entire group. We respect individual expression and treasure diversity. We know that every one of us is at a different place creatively. We're here to provide tools to encourage creative growth and all the immense benefits that come with it, regardless of where we are in that journey.
Q: How are you different from a traditional art academy?
A: Education is the foundation of painting fluency. We're all into becoming more versed in painting through learning and practice. But we find that academicism is too rooted in conventional rules and traditions. We're against standardization when it comes to creativity. Even though we are aware we use a representational language and traditional painting techniques (oil), we're more interested in how those tools can advance our own personal and individual process.
Also, we have busy schedules and have barely time for self-care. We paint when we can and we make the best of it when we're in the thick of it.
Q: What if I have all the materials and a lot of experience?
A: We created Roofless Painters because there are way too many artists, experienced or not, who don't have access to materials, space, opportunities, or prefer to join an instruction-based group rather than going solo. We work very hard to create and provide that access, connecting with local leaders and business owners, seeking approval, finding opportunities, supporting our community. There is a lot of work behind the scenes.
If you have your own setup and a lot of experience and are looking for a more unstructured and less self-contained experience, we suggest you look for local groups on MeetUp or Eventbright where other creatives meet.
