IMPRESSION: FIRE SUN
The next painting webinar is titled IMPRESSION: FIRE SUN. It's our 36th painting series of 2020 and our 26th series since we retreated into our homes.
Learning about Berthe Morisot through her painting Summer Day lead us to not only explore Cerulean Blue but other blues we were not familiar with. One of them, now our favorite Blue, is Prussian Blue.
In finding examples of paintings that used Prussian Blue, we found ourselves looking at Monet's iconic painting Impression: sunrise, a painting depicting Le Havre's harbor through a screen of fog and smoke with an orange sun poking through.
While this whole learning process was happening, the dozens of fires burning around us summoned ominous smoke plumes so gigantic that they choked the entire sky into a sepia otherworld. It's terrifying.
We will get inspired by Monet's painting and create a landscape from images that people have taken of the rusty sun trying to poke a hole in the smoke pimple we're currently submerged. The only warm colors will be located on the sun. The rest of the painting will be a study of the atmosphere done in gray and Prussian Blue, regardless of the colors on the photo.
• Painting premise: Landscape.
• Props: Photo taken of the sun (a photo bank will be provided)
• Painting surface: any size, any kind. We recommend 9x12 or under.
• Painting webinar medium: oil over cotton paper. Feel free to select your media.
