Painting Series: POMEGRANATES
"We don't even know what time of the year it is," said Lois.
Unless we go to a Trader Joe's and see the yearly display of pumpkins, gourds, and haystacks, we can't tell what season we're in. Besides, this year, between the human distancing, self-detention periods, and not traveling, we feel the natural hourglass broke. Add to that the Dantesque clusterfuck we're being tormented with day in and day out. We're in a Time black hole.
We hear distant echoes of leaves turning color, first rains, and sweater weather allegedly showing up across the land. Still, here, apart from days getting considerably shorter now and a seldom cloudy sky, things are in a loop. We still have mosquitos. We haven't changed our bed linens yet. Wind?
The truth is that we're in full PPP season (Pumpkin-Persimmon-Pomegranate). How do we know that? Because we found our breath caught at a painting of a pomegranate still life by contemporary painter Samir Rakhmanov. For an instant, we felt transported to a place of beauty and sweetness. "It's October," we whispered to ourselves.
Why not look away for a painterly minute from the hellish hamster wheel of anguish we're stuck in and take some time to honor PPP season with Pomegranates? Let's take a break and paint them in stillness.
