Oil on 12" x 16" cotton paper, unframed, 2019
Painting series: THEIR NAME IS ALOK.
🎨
Biology, sexuality, and identity: most of us are able to combine those three concepts easily into two gender categories. But that doesn’t mean everyone conforms to that binary system.
🎨
Sunday, March 31 is Transgender Day of Visibility, an opportunity to learn about how our idea of gender comes from a historical human construction, just like borders, laws, or religion, that doesn’t really represent the reality of some of us falling naturally somewhere between the two only accepted sides.
🎨
Voices like @alokvmenon are questioning the way society constructs these issues and advocate for a new common space that truly and fairly represents everyone who participates in it.
🎨
We got inspired by Alok’s self-expressive portraits to create a painting series that challenges the mainstream canon of gender and beauty.
