Number ten, by Sarah Jennings
9" x 12", oil on cotton paper, 2019
From the series TWENTY-FIVE. In 1962 painter #GerhardRichter starts creating monochromatic and very representational paintings with a blurry finish. Blurring an image corrupts it, corrodes it, degrades it, shrouds its emotion, buries its light. Many of the blurred snapshot-scenes Richter produced in the 60s were of relatives he would never see again, childhood locations he’d never step foot again. Portraits of victims and villains in the news.
🎨
With this series we've taken that physical and conceptual aspect of Richter’s work to create 25 monochromatic portraits of the twenty-five legislators in Alabama that this past week stepped up the war against reproductive rights a thespian notch with their votes.
