Balloon, by Karen McCullah
9" x 12", oil on cotton paper, unframed 2018
From the panting series BALLOON LIGHT, inspired by Doug Aitken's project ONE HORIZON.
Doug Aitken is a contemporary artist born in Redondo Beach that's known for his mirror-wrapped house installed in the first Desert X and the underwater sculptures in Catalina Island.
In July 2019 he flew a hot air balloon made with a reflective fabric over several locations in Massachusetts.
The absence of color and pattern on the balloon create the perfect setup for a light study. We got inspired by some of Aitken's balloon images from his project to create the paintings in this series.
